How to Win The War Against Fleas

Have you noticed your furry pal scratching lately? If so, your four-legged may companion have fleas. These disgusting little parasites can make pets miserably itchy. They can also transmit other parasites, such as tapeworms. Read on as a Newmarket, ON vet from Armitage Animal Clinic offers advice on fighting fleas.

Parasite Control Products

First and foremost, make sure your dog or cat is up to date on their parasite control regime. When it comes to caring for pets, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! There are many different varieties of flea-fighting products to choose from, including topical drops, collars, and shampoos. Ask your vet for recommendations. Be sure to follow the instructions to the letter when applying these products, as they must be used properly to be both safe and effective.

Vacuum

Vacuuming is also very effective at fighting fleas. It will also help a lot with keeping your carpets fur-free! We recommend vacuuming high-traffic areas and your pet’s favorite spots daily, and doing more thorough cleanings once a week. When you are finished, immediately change the bag or dump the contents of the canister. Put the waste into a plastic bag, and then seal it and take it outdoors. This will help prevent fleas from escaping back into your home. If you have a dog and like to take Fido out with you, you’ll also need to vacuum your vehicle out regularly.

Lawn/Garden

There are also some things you can do around your property to help keep fleas away. Keeping your lawn neatly mowed will help, as fleas love to lurk in tall grasses. This applies to hedges as well: if you have shrubs, make sure none of the bushes are touching your house. Also, be sure to keep debris, such as fallen leaves and dead branches, picked up. These things make inviting habitats for unwanted guests! If you have a shady yard, trimming some branches back can also be beneficial, since sunlight dries fleas (and ticks) out. If you have a garden or fruit trees, be sure to pick up any fallen produce: it can attract wild animals that carry fleas.
