Early Disease Detection

I have often commented that most of my pet owners are very in tune with their pets and will act quickly when the first sign of illness occurs. Ultimately, they turn to me to identify the diagnosis and make an appropriate treatment plan.

Unfortunately for all living creatures (including us) the body is extremely sophisticated at hiding early disease until the progression of illness can be fairly advanced.

I lose count of how many times clients will say to me, “how could this happen so fast?” It pains me to have to say that the disease process was “hidden” until a threshold was reached – at which point the body just could not mask it anymore. This concept becomes extremely critical as the pet enters maturity at 7 years of age.

Our emphasis at the Armitage Animal Clinic is to focus and emphasize wellness care for all our pets. The most important information that we can get is to study trends over the course of the pet’s life. Specifically, what changes do we and you the owner see with regards to activity, appetite, weight, behaviour, frequency of drinking and urination and onset of abnormal signs like vomiting or toilet accidents.

We can then use more specific diagnostic testing at our local vet clinic in Newmarket to fine tune our diagnosis. Initial testing that is extremely helpful includes routine blood pressure readings (yes we know that they are scared at the clinic, so this is always factored into the assessment), bloodwork and analysis of urine and feces. These tests are done frequently throughout the course of a pet’s life at our vet clinic. By monitoring trends, I am on the alert for any deviation from the norm. The data received from these tests help to detect early disease. Conversely, being able to say that all baseline values appear normal is just as rewarding.

I cannot overemphasize the importance of wellness medicine and the peace of mind that it offers to you and our team. Knowing that your furry family member is happy and comfortable gives us all peace of mind.
