Fun Games to Play with Your Dog

Does your dog like playing games? Our canine friends are definitely a fun-loving bunch. Fido may run up to you holding a toy when he wants to play, or he may do the ‘play bow’ to let you know he’s feeling frisky. When you think of games to play with your pooch, Tug-O-War, Fetch, and Frisbee are probably at the top of the list. There are lots of other fun activities you can enjoy with your canine buddy! Your Newmarket vet lists some great examples in this article.

Hide and Seek

The classic children’s game is also fun for pets! Grab one of Fido’s favorite toys, or a few yummy treats. Have him sit and stay put, and then go to another part of the home and hide with the goodies. Call your dog to you. When your canine buddy finds you, reward him!

Agility Fun

Outdoor agility courses are great for dogs. You don’t have to spend a ton of money on equipment or even have to go outside to play this game. Use blankets or boxes to set up a little obstacle course. Walk Fido over it a few times, then go to the other end of the room and direct him through the course.

Simon Says

Remember this fun game? Simon Says can be great for pups who have mastered the five basic commands, which are Sit, Stay, Heel, Lie Down, and Come. Get some of Fido’s favorite treats, and run him through the commands. Change the order of the commands to keep it challenging, and reward him whenever he gets it right.

Red Light, Green Light

This is a great option because you can entertain both your children and your pooch at once! To make this classic doggy-friendly, just change the command words to ‘Come’ and ‘Stay’. Give Fido treats whenever he gets it right!

Name Games

Start by picking up a few of Fido’s favorite playthings. Hold up one toy and name it, using simple words like ‘Teddy Bear’ or ‘Ball’. Say the toy’s ‘name’ as you toss it for him to fetch. Repeat with the other toy. When you think Fido knows the toys, throw both, but only name one. If he retrieves the correct toy, reward him.
