5 Ways to Fight Fleas

Summer is here! While many of us enjoy the warm weather, it does have its downsides, such as the fact that summer is prime season for fleas. These disgusting parasites can make your beloved pet miserably itchy, and they can also spread dangerous diseases. We are here to help! Read on as a Newmarket, ON vet offers some great tips on keeping fleas away from both your pet and your property.

Parasite Control Products

First and foremost, be sure to keep up with your furry pal’s parasite control products. There are many different kinds to choose from, including sprays, powders, collars, shampoos, and topical drops. No matter what kind you use, be sure to follow the directions to the letter. You also want to avoid doubling up on these products, as that can expose your beloved pet to dangerous levels of chemicals. Ask your vet for specific recommendations.

Vacuuming regularly is one of the best things you can do to battle fleas in your home. We recommend doing high-traffic areas and your pet’s favorite spots daily, and following up with more thorough cleanings about once a week. If your furry pal is a heavy shedder, you may want to look into getting a robotic vacuum, so it can do the work for you. When you finish, empty the canister into a plastic bag, then immediately seal the bag and take it out of the house.

Lawn Care/Landscaping

Fleas like to lurk in moist, shady areas, and often hide in overgrown brush. Keep your lawn neatly trimmed, and cut back overhanging branches, so your yard gets more sunlight. You’ll also want to be sure to remove debris, such as dead leaves and branches, from your property. If you have a severe infestation, you may need to treat your yard, especially your pet’s favorite spots. Be careful not to expose Fido to dangerous pesticides: choose pet-friendly methods, if possible.

Wash your furry friend’s bedding about once a week, using hot water and unscented detergent. You’ll want to dry it on the hottest setting. This will help kill both adult fleas and their eggs. We also recommend keeping dirty laundry off the floor, as piles of clothing can make inviting habitats for these unwanted guests.
