5 Ways to Keep Your Cat Active

If you have a cat, you’ve probably noticed that our feline friends are, well, rather sleepy. Fluffy devotes a large chunk of her time to snoozing. While sleeping kitties are definitely adorable, all those naps can make it easy for these drowsy furballs to get out of shape and become obese. A local Sharon, ON vet discusses how to keep your feline friend moving in this article.

Getting Fluffy a cat tower is a great way to keep her active! Cat towers are great for our feline friends, as they promote healthy activities like running, jumping, and climbing. They also offer your kitty a jungle gym, and a great spot from which she can reach out and grab your sleeve.

Take time to play with your kitty every day. Use fun toys that you can control, so that Fluffy can pounce and jump on her plaything as though it were real prey. Laser pointers are a great option: just be sure not to shine the light right into your cat’s eyes.

Make sure your kitty has lots of fun toys to play with. Cats all have their own preferences for toys: some like catnip mice, while others prefer dangly feather toys. Some of our feline pals may like modern toys, like robotic mice and automated laser pointers, while others may just want to play with a crumpled up piece of paper or the plastic ring from a milk gallon. Try some different things to see what your furball likes best.

One great way to get your kitty moving is to get her a playmate. This is a great option if Fluffy is still a kitten! Of course, adopting a new pet is a huge decision and a lifetime commitment, so think carefully before proceeding.

When trying to get cats to do, well, pretty much anything, a little bribery may be needed. If you tell your furball to run down the hall, she’ll probably just blink and yawn. However, if you toss one of her toys across the room, she’ll instinctively run after it and pounce on it. Every little bit helps!
