National Puppy Day

Did you know that March 23rd is National Puppy Day? We know, puppies are adorable, and should be celebrated every day! If you’re bringing a new puppy into your household, you are certainly bound for some adorable moments. In this article from Armitage Animal Clinic in Newmarket, ON, a local vet talks about Fido’s puppy stage.

Diet

Good nutrition is absolutely crucial to puppies. Dogs grow very fast in their first year, so you’ll need to make sure little Fido is getting proper nourishment. Ask your vet for recommendations, including serving sizes, supplements, and suitable treats.

Toys

Keep your canine buddy’s toy box full! Playthings will help keep Fido entertained, and offer him a healthy way to burn off all that energy. Toys can also help him with the pain of teething.

Puppyproofing

Your four-legged friend has a lot to learn about the world. Little Fido will be very interested in figuring out just what he can and can’t eat and/or play with. This can get a frisky pup into some serious trouble! To keep your furry pal safe, you’ll want to do some puppyproofing. Remove or secure toxic plants, plastic bags and ties, chemicals, medicines, and anything small or sharp. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Training

Proper training is very important! In addition to housebreaking and crate training, the little guy will need to learn basic doggy obedience commands, like Sit, Stay, Come, and Heel.

Veterinary Care

Little Fido will need to see the vet a few times during that crucial first year. Microchipping, spay/neuter surgery, exams, vaccines, and parasite control are all in order. You’ll also want to get some advice on your furry buddy’s diet, exercise, and care needs.

Socialization

Socialization is very important for baby dogs. You’ll need to expose little Fido to new places, faces, and experiences while he is little. This will encourage him to form positive associations with new things, which will help him grow into a friendly, well-behaved dog. Ask your vet for more information.

Tail Wags And Puppy Kisses

Spend plenty of time with your adorable new pet, and make sure he feels secure, loved, and comfortable. Fido’s toddler stage won’t last long, so enjoy it while you can. Don’t forget to take lots of cute pictures!
