Helping Your Dogs Become Friends

Have you recently adopted a second dog? We love seeing pooches go to great forever homes! Your resident pup may not be as happy as we are about your new pet, however. Dogs can be quite jealous of one another, and aren’t always thrilled to find they have a new roommate! In this article from Armitage Animal Clinic, a Newmarket, ON vet discusses helping Fido and Spot get along.

Choosing The Right Pets

Picking the right pooch to add to your household is half the battle. Choose a pup that gets along well with other dogs. It may help if your new arrival is a puppy: in that case, Fido will teach little Spot the do’s and don’ts of being a good dog. If your current pup is an alpha dog, look for a more submissive pup, rather than another alpha pup.

First Impressions

First impressions are a very big deal to our animal companions. Don’t just toss your pets into the yard together and hope for the best. You want your dogs to meet on neutral ground first. Enlist a friend or family member to meet you at a park. Take your furry pals for a long walk together, and see how they do. This will allow Fido and Spot to get to know each other a bit. Plus, Fido will feel more comfortable if he doesn’t feel like he has to protect his territory from Spot. We recommend doing this before you finalize the adoption. If things don’t go well, you may want to reconsider.

Offer Plenty of Doggy Comforts

Make sure that your canine buddies don’t have to compete for resources. Fido and Spot should both have their own bowls, beds, crates, and toys.

Walk Them Together

One of the best things you can do is to walk your dogs together. This lets Fido and Spot bond, and helps them think of one another as pack mates. Plus, it will help burn off any excess energy they have. Afterwards, they’ll be calmer and, therefore, better behaved.

One fight may not be a big deal. However, if your dogs often fight, you’ll want to consult your vet or a professional pet behaviorist. Better safe than sorry!
