7 Ways To Keep Your Senior Cat Purring

July 1 2019

Is your kitty nearing her golden years? Senior cats are super cute. They spend most of their time snoozing, and often become extremely affectionate. Fluffy’s needs will change as she ages, so you may need to adjust your pet’s care regimen a bit. In this article from Armitage Animal Clinic, a Newmarket, ON vet offers some tips on keeping older cats happy and purring.

Beds

By the time your furball reaches her senior years, she’ll be a ninja napper, capable of sleeping up to 20 hours a day. Make sure your kitty has lots of comfy napping spots to choose from. Store-bought beds are great, but you can also put soft pillows or folded blankets in boxes, wicker baskets, or on chairs. Older cats often seek out warm spots, so you’ll get extra purrs for putting some of your pet’s beds in sunny areas.

Nightlights

Fluffy may experience a decline in her vision as she ages. Get some nightlights to help your feline buddy find her way around after dark.

Playtime

Although your kitty won’t be as frisky as she once was, you’ll probably still be able to tempt her into playing a little. Even a few minutes of pouncing and running each day will benefit Fluffy.

Veterinary Care

Although it’s probably safe to say that most of our feline patients would rather take a nap than visit us, this is one area where we really do know best. Keeping up with your furry friend’s veterinary care needs is very important! Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule.

Facilities

Older cats often find it easier to get in and out of litterboxes with low sides. You may want to get Fluffy a different litterbox.

Kitty Ramps

Senior cats sometimes have a hard time climbing up to their favorite perches. Set out pet ramps or stairs for Fluffy. You can also just put an ottoman or footstool out for her to use as stairs.

Love

At the end of the day, older cats really just want to feel loved. Spend time with Fluffy every day, and pay attention to her. Talk to her, pet her, and let her snuggle up on you. Senior cat purrs are truly precious!
