Fostering a Dog

June 1 2020

June is Foster A Pet Month! As you may have heard, there are many pups in need of fostering right now. That’s always the case, but this year the situation is especially dire, due to the coronavirus. Fostering can be a great way for you to make the most of a bad situation and help your local community. In this article from Armitage Animal Clinic, a local Newmarket, ON vet discusses fostering dogs.

Reasons To Foster

Fido may need foster care for many reasons. Some fosters are puppies who need training and socialization before being put up for adoption. Young puppies may need overnight care, which shelters are unable to provide. Others are dogs whose owners are ill, recuperating, away for work or deployment, or just going through tough times, as many people are this year.

Benefits

Fostering can be a great way to make a difference. You’ll be helping that one pet blossom and thrive by giving them some much-needed TLC. This is also a way to make the most of your time, and just brighten your day up a bit. It can also be fun, comforting, and educational for kids. Tail wags and puppy smooches can make any day better!

Considerations

There are some things to keep in mind. Make sure that you have the money, space, and time to foster a pooch. You’ll also want to consider your family members, as well as any other pets you have. It’s worth mentioning that many people have a hard time saying goodbye when the time comes. It’s wonderful to see a pet you’ve taken care of go to a great forever home, but it can also be very bittersweet. This is also something to think about if you have kids. It may be hard for them to say goodbye to a cute canine they’ve grown attached to! If you think this may be an issue, adoption may be a better route for you to take.

Getting Ready

Have you decided to go ahead with fostering? If so, you’ll want to start making preparations. Some puppyproofing is in order. Remove or secure anything that could potentially be toxic. This includes things like toxic plants; plastic bags and ties; wires and cords; medicine; chemicals; and small or sharp objects.
