Winter may not have officially started yet, but we’re definitely into the cold part of the year. Some of our canine patients love to run and play in the snow. Others? Not so much. Regardless of what category Fido falls into, your pup will need some extra TLC at this time of year. Exercise
Dreary winter days make perfect napping weather. Fido may spend a lot of time curled up in his bed over the next several months. He also may not want to linger on his walks. Don’t let your pup become a complete couch potato! Keep him active by playing with him regularly.
Bedding
Is your dog’s bed worn down to a few inches of material? If so, it’s probably time for a new one. A good bed will insulate Fido from chilly floors, and help him sleep comfortably at night. Make sure your furry pal’s bed isn’t in a chilly or drafty area.
Paws
Winter air is rough on our skin, and it’s hard on Fido’s, too. Use paw balm to protect your pet’s furry feet from chafing and cracking. Keep in mind that salt, sand, ice, snow, and chemical de-icers can all hurt your canine companion’s feet. Get pet-safe de-icing products. Also, when you’re walking your pooch, try to stay off sand and salt if you can.
Grooming
Fido’s fur coat will help him stay warm. However, some dogs’ coats offer better natural insulation than others do. A husky may be delighted to romp and roll in fresh snow, while a Chihuahua will be uncomfortable after a mild frost. If your four-legged friend has thin fur, get him a warm jacket to wear. It’s also important to brush your dog regularly, to remove that dead fur and dander from his coat.
Dark
The sun goes down early at this time of year. Bring a flashlight with you when walking Fido, and stick to well-lit areas. If you know you won’t be home before dark, turn a light on before you leave, so your furry friend isn’t stuck sitting alone in a dark, quiet house. That’s no fun for anyone!
