April 30th is Adopt A Shelter Pet Day! We love it when shelter dogs get adopted and join our roster of adorable, beloved patients. However, it may take time for Fido to adjust to his new home. Big changes—like getting adopted—can be pretty hard on Man’s Best Friend. In this article from Armitage Animal Clinic, a Newmarket, ON vet discusses helping your furry pal settle in.
P uppyproofing
Some puppyproofing is definitely in order. Keep anything you don’t want Fido eating or chewing out of paws’ reach. This includes things like small or sharp items, toxic plants, wires and cords, and plastic bags and ties. It’s worth noting that many shelter dogs are prone to separation anxiety. Sadly, this is because many of them have been abandoned by owners before. If you come home to find your pet has made a mess, this could be the cause. Ask your vet for advice on helping your pup cope.
Safety
Fido may have quirks or phobias you don’t know about yet. You don’t want him jerking the leash out of your hand and bolting if he spots a squirrel or gets scared of a car horn! Get a good harness or collar with a sturdy leash.
Safe Place
Offer Fido a quiet, comfy place to relax and settle in. If you have other pets, keep them separated at first. Ask your vet for tips on making introductions.
Expect Lots Of Naps
Fido may sleep a lot those first few weeks. This is only to be expected. Being in a shelter is just as stressful and scary for pups as it seems. Your canine buddy may spend a lot of time napping as he recuperates, unwinds, and recharges. Get him a comfy doggy bed, and let him snooze.
Give It Time
We love seeing shelter dogs thrive in loving forever homes. Just bear in mind that it may take your furry friend some time to feel safe. Generally, dogs need a few days to settle in, a few weeks to adjust, and a few months to really feel at home. Be patient! You’ll want to schedule a veterinary appointment for Fido ASAP, but aside from that, just give him time to get settled. You’ll have that cute tail going in no time!
