Did you know that July is Pet Hydration Month? People often think that dehydration is mainly an issue in warmer, southern clients. This isn’t entirely wrong, but pets can get dehydrated in any weather or season, even when it’s very cold. A Newmarket, ON veterinarian offers some ‘pawesome’ advice on keeping your canine buddy properly hydrated in this article from Armitage Animal Hospital.
Water
The most important thing is to make sure that Fido always has fresh, clean water. If you have more than one pooch, a large house, and/or a fenced yard, you’ll need more than one water station. These bowls should be cleaned daily, as otherwise they’ll get grimy and germy. Yuck!
Doggy On The Go
Fido will always need to have water available whenever you take him out and about. You may want to get him a doggy water bottle with an attached dispenser. Consider keeping one in your car for him. You can also get dog-walking fanny packs or backpacks that include these.
Broth
Sodium-free broth is great for hydration as well, as it contains electrolytes. On hot days, your four-legged friend may like a bowl of cold broth, or even frozen broth cubes.
Pet Fountains
Did you know that many of our furry buddies prefer to drink running water? Why not get Fido a pet fountain? Some just keep water circulating. Others shoot water into the air. (We probably don’t have to tell you how cute this is to watch.)
Treats
When it’s hot out, offer your canine pal treats that have a higher moisture content. Frozen pupsicles are one good option. You can also get Fido his own doggy ice cream, or look up recipes and make your own. Just stick with safe ingredients. You can also freeze things like water or yogurt in Kong toys.
Lakes
Do you like to go hiking with your furry best friend? Be careful not to let Fido slurp water out of puddles, lakes, ponds, or rivers. The water could be contaminated by parasites, blue-green algae, chemicals, or other hazards. If you’re out camping, bring bottled water if you can. If you can’t, boil or treat water before giving it to your pup, just as you would your own.
