Fall Care For Senior Dogs

September 29 2021

Autumn is here! This time of year is beautiful here in Ontario. It also makes for some perfect weather for walking or playing with your canine friend. Of course, while puppies may be thrilled to jump in leaf piles or go hiking, older dogs may be more interested in finding warm napping spots. In this article from Armitage Animal Clinic, a Newmarket, ON veterinarian offers some tips on caring for your aging pup in autumn.

Beds

A good bed is an absolute must! Fido needs good cushioning for his old bones, so he can sleep comfortably. Orthopedic beds are great options for older dogs. If your four-legged pal has thin fur, he may also enjoy a thermal blanket.

Stocking Up

This is the time of year to make sure that both you and your canine pal are ready for the cold weather. Slips are one thing to be concerned about with older dogs. Stock up on pet-friendly de-icing agents. You’ll also want to get some paw balm to protect your pup’s furry feet. Nail trims are also important. Fido won’t get very good traction if his claws are overgrown!

Nutrition

Proper nutrition is important for dogs of all ages, but it’s particularly crucial for seniors. Fido may need slightly bigger portions, especially if he spends a lot of time outdoors, has a thin coat, or is on the skinny side. Your pooch may also benefit from supplements, particularly if he has arthritis or hip dysplasia. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Grooming

Fido probably isn’t any more fond of baths now than he was as a puppy. However, he’ll definitely be more comfortable if his fur is clean and free of mats and tangles. Give your furry bff a bath before it gets cold.

Darkness

The sun is setting earlier and earlier. If you leave your four-legged friend home while you go to work, turn a light on for him, so he isn’t stuck in a dark, quiet house. You’ll also need to take care when walking Fido at night.

Tail Wags

As your dog gets older, you may find that he somehow manages to become even more loving and adorable. Pay lots of attention to Fido, and keep that cute tail going!
