Senior Cat Care

November 15 2021

Is your kitty a senior? Cats aged seven or older are considered seniors. Once your feline pal is officially at this stage in her life, you’ll need to make some adjustments to her care regimen. In this article from Armitage Animal Hospital, a Newmarket, ON vet offers some helpful tips on caring for your senior cat.

Health

As your cat ages, she may become more vulnerable to illness and injury. Some problems can be dealt with at home, but others require a trip to the veterinarian. Keep an eye out for warning signs! Some of these include hiding, behavioral changes, decreased appetite, litterbox issues, increased or decreased thirst, weight gain or loss, respiratory issues, lethargy, vomiting, fever, seizures, dental problems, and poor fur condition. Contact your vet if you notice any of these issues.

Exercise

Senior cats need exercise just as much as any other kitty. It can be tricky getting a senior cat in motion, as they tend to be a little less agile and a lot less active than when they were younger. Playing with your furry buddy daily is a great workout for her.

Nutrition

It may be tempting to simply continue feeding Fluffy the same food you’ve always given her. After all, she still eats it, right? But just because your kitty continues to eat without complaint doesn’t mean that her nutritional needs haven’t changed. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Health

Caring for a senior cat requires a different approach than caring for a younger one. Keep in mind that proactive care can delay or even prevent disease. Fluffy will need to see her doctor regularly. Of course, going to the vet can be a scary experience for your feline friend. You can help keep your cat as stress-free as possible by familiarizing her with her carrier beforehand.

Comfort

Don’t be surprised if your kitty chooses to sleep more, eat less, and groom themselves less. If Fluffy is having trouble climbing into high places or jumping onto furniture, she may need some pet ramps or stairs. You’ll also need to provide lots of soft beds.

Tips

One key to helping your feline buddy age successfully is to focus on her lifestyle. Cats are happier and healthier if their needs are met. Those include exercise, stimulation, proper nutrition, wellness care, and careful monitoring, as well as lots of love.
