Winter Dog Care: Must-Have Products

January 15 2022

Love it or hate it, winter is officially upon us. Our canine pals definitely have very divided opinions about the cold. Of course, Fido’s care needs do change a bit from season to season. You may need to keep a few things on hand for your pooch at this time of year. A local vet lists some of them in this article from Arapahoe, your Newmarket, ON animal clinic.

Paw Balm

Fido won’t be able to get very good traction if his paws are cracked and dry. Use a paw balm or wax to keep those furry feet moisturized. (Tip: Vaseline will work in a pinch.)

Pet-Safe Products

Chemical de-icers can be very rough on your canine buddy’s feet. Even rock salt can cause painful scrapes and abrasions. Look for a pet-friendly product, one that doesn’t contain salt or chloride. We recommend getting pet-safe antifreeze, too!

Leash Flashlight

At this time of year, you’ll probably be walking Fido after dark quite a bit. Consider getting a flashlight that attaches to his leash, to help you see the terrain at night. It also makes you and your furry bff easier for drivers to spot.

Booties

Some of our canine companions want nothing to do with wearing shoes. However, others really do appreciate having an extra layer of protection between their paws and those icy sidewalks. If Fido doesn’t mind wearing booties, keep several sets on hand for him.

Towel

Keep a towel near the door that you bring Fido in and out of. That way, when you have to take your four-legged friend out in snow or freezing rain, you have something on hand to dry him off with.

Door Mat

It’s probably safe to say that Fido is going to track a lot of snow, salt, sand, ice, and mud into the house before summer comes along. Put a doggy doormat outside to help clean his paws. Bath mats work well for this, as they’re so absorbent.

Jacket

This one only applies to pups with thin coats. If Fido is a snow dog, such as a husky, he could actually overheat in clothes, even in winter. However, if your pooch has thin, short fur, he’ll need a comfy sweater or jacket to keep him warm.
