5 Things To Do For Responsible Pet Ownership Month

February 1 2022

February is Responsible Pet Ownership Month! It’s always good to occasionally stop and revisit your furry buddy’s care regimen, and make sure you’re providing great TLC. That entails much more than just offering treats and belly rubs. A local vet lists some of the things you can do for your animal companion in this article from Armitage, your local Newmarket, ON animal clinic.

Consider Preventative Health Plans

Have you ever considered getting a wellness plan for your pet? Preventative care plans allow you to budget the cost of basic wellness care into flat rates. This is beneficial in a few ways. For one thing, it can be very helpful for financial planning. It’s also a great motivator for people to bring their pets in more often. The end result of that? Healthier (and therefore happier) pets!

Schedule An Appointment

Has it been a while since your animal companion has come to see us? Why not make an appointment? We recommend that Fluffy and Fido be fixed, microchipped, and kept current on vaccines and parasite control. Regular exams are also important.

Provide Enrichment

Our furry pals may spend a lot of time napping, especially at this time of year, but they do still need things to do when they’re actually awake. For cats, this entails offering toys for Fluffy to pounce on, and giving her things to explore, like boxes and paper grocery bags. Kitties also like window seats. As for Fido, walks, training, adventures, and doggy play dates all help keep that tail wagging. Playing is also important.

Training

This one of course mostly applies to dogs: kitties have a way of training their humans, rather than it being the other way around. If your canine pal doesn’t know basic doggy obedience commands, like Sit and Stay, take time to teach him!

ID

We hope that none of our patients ever get lost. However, this unfortunately does happen. In fact, one in three pets will go missing at some point in their lives. Be prepared for the worst by making sure your furry bff is microchipped and wearing ID tags. If you have a dog that loves to run off, consider getting Fido a GPS collar.
