Did you know that July 10th is National Kitten Day? There are few things more adorable than baby cats. Of course, having a kitten isn’t all about cuddles and purrs. If you’ve just adopted a kitten, you’ve got some pet parenting ahead of you! Basics
Proper nutrition is absolutely essential. Little Fluffy needs lots of nourishment to fuel that big growth spurt! Offer your feline pal a good, kitten-formula pet food. Your vet can offer specific advice.
Petiquette
Sooner or later, your fuzzy buddy is going to act up. Don’t punish her for this: that will just frighten her. You can say ‘No’ or ‘Bad kitty’ or ‘Don’t bite’ in a firm tone, but anything more than that will be counterproductive. It’s much more effective to reinforce good behavior. When little Fluffy is behaving properly, pet her and praise her. It won’t take long before she pretty much beams when you call her a good kitty.
Playing
Playing is important for several reasons. It offers entertainment, stimulation, and a great workout. It also helps teach kitties how to properly release any energy or frustration: by taking it out on their toys, rather than you. Finally, it helps cement the bond between you. Play with your furry little friend daily!
Shopping
Your feline friend will need some kitty basics, such as toys, dishes, and, of course, beds. In general, you can get things made for adult cats. However, you should avoid clay and clumping litters. With kittens, these present a risk of possible (accidental) ingestion, which can cause serious—and potentially fatal—complications.
Veterinary Care
One of the first things you’ll want to do is take little Fluffy to meet her new doctor. Your little furball will need a nose-to-tail exam. She’ll also need to get started on her parasite control and vaccinations. Microchipping and spay/neuter surgery should be on the agenda.
Love
You’re starting out on a long, beautiful relationship with your tiny furry overlord. In order for little Fluffy to properly learn how to meowpulate you, she’ll need to really bond with you. Pay lots of attention to her!
