Holiday Cookies For Fido

December 1 2022

Do you enjoy baking? If so, you may want to try your hand at making dog cookies. These not only get Fido’s cute tail going, they also make great snacks for his buddies! A veterinarian offers some advice on making homemade goodies in this article from Armitage Animal Clinic, your Newmarket, ON animal clinic.

Basic Biscuits

There’s no shortage of biscuit recipes. One thing they all have in common? They start with a base. You can use sodium-free beef, fish, or chicken broth, bacon bits, liver powder, whole-wheat flour, shredded meat and/or cheese, plain yogurt, natural peanut butter, wheat germ oil, or egg. Feel free to mix and match! To customize them, add bacon bits, safe veggies, or shredded cheese. Cook at 375 for about 20 minutes.

Pumpkin Bites

Combine pureed pumpkin with some natural peanut butter, an egg, and whole-wheat flour. Cook for 15-20 minutes at 350: add more time if needed.

Sweet Potato Bites

Mix a cup of canned sweet potato with an egg and brown rice flour. Divide into small portions, and bake at 350 for about 20 minutes.

Fido’s Festivus Treats

Mix natural peanut butter with bacon grease, plain yogurt, and whole-wheat flour, and baking soda. Roll the batter out, and then divide into portions. 15 minutes at 375 should do it!

Servings

You may want to get a bone-shaped cookie cutter: this will make Fido’s snacks look nice, and also help distinguish them from people foods. Bake at 375 for about 15 minutes.

Tuna Yums

Mix canned tuna with some plain yogurt and a little parsley, then divide into small portions. (Tip: if you’re making these for cats, small bottlecaps work well to divide the portions. Bake at 375 for about 20 minutes.

Chicken Snacks

You’ll mix diced or shredded chicken with cooked rice, brown rice flour, a little parsley, and an egg. Once you have the batter divided, pop it in the oven for about 25 minutes at 350.

Unsafe Foods

Only use pet-safe ingredients. Never use garlic, onions, scallions, or chives; nuts; grapes, currants or raisins; xylitol; chocolate; pitted fruits; avocado; caffeine; or alcohol. Meat on the bone is also unsafe, as are raw dough and yeast. Ask your vet for more information.
