Calming a Rambunctious Dog

June 15 2019

Do you have a furry bundle of zoom on your hands? Fido is certainly very energetic and playful. While frisky dogs are adorable, they can also be a bit of a handful. In this article from Armitage Animal Clinic, a local Sharon, ON vet offers advice on calming down a feisty pup.

Exercise

The best thing you can do to calm Fido down is make sure that he’s getting enough exercise and stimulation. Your dog’s exact workout requirements will depend on his age, size, breed, and health, so ask your vet for recommendations. (Tip: if your pooch has more energy than you do, try playing games like Fetch, which have your playful pet running around while you stay relatively still.)

Make Sure Fido Has Room To Play

While walks and playtime will burn off some of Fido’s excess energy, they may not entirely wear him out. Ideally, you’ll want a large area, such as a fenced in yard, where your furry pal can run and play as much as he wants. If you don’t have a yard, take your pup to the dog park.

Obedience Training

Dogs are very smart, but they have to be taught what is and is not appropriate behavior. Obedience training can make a huge difference here. If you’re not comfortable training your four-legged friend yourself, enroll Fido in a doggy daycare or obedience class. It will be well worth it!

Be Consistent

Being consistent is absolutely crucial when it comes to dealing with bad petiquette. If you yell at Fido for acting up one day, and then let him get away with it the next, you’re teaching your canine buddy that he can get away with acting up, at least sometimes. Set some rules, and stick to them!

Keep A Schedule

Dogs really thrive on routine. Keep your canine pal on a consistent schedule for walks, meals, and playtime. Fido may not act up as much if he knows he’s about to go for a long stroll.

Toys

Toys are important for many reasons. They keep dogs occupied and entertained, offer them mental stimulation, and fend off the dreaded bored-doggy blues. Offer Fido a variety of playthings. Change your pup’s things out regularly to keep things fun and fresh for him.
