Happy Holidays! Over the next few weeks, we’ll likely be seeing lots of cute photos of puppies and kittens enjoying their first holiday season in their new homes. We know, many people like to bring new pets home around the holidays. However, there are some things to consider here. A local vet offers some tips on adopting Fido and Fluffy in this article from Armitage Animal Clinic, your Newmarket, ON animal clinic.
Don’t Give Pets As Gifts
This is definitely a huge faux pas (or faux paws). For one thing, it’s important for people to choose animals they connect with on some level. People can form close bonds with specific animals, but just not click with others, just as we do when interacting with other people. You’re also signing the recipient up for loads of bills, as well as the time and work needed to care for the pet. If you know that one of your loved ones really wants an animal companion, get them a gift card from a pet store. Or, just offer to help pitch in for expenses down the road.
Petproof
Petproofing is always important when bringing a new pet into your family, but it’s particularly crucial around the holidays. Many seasonal trappings just aren’t safe for our furry friends! Keep anything small or sharp, such as ornaments and ornament hooks, out of reach. Candles are also unsafe, as are tinsel, lights, ribbon, pine needles, and many popular plants. Ask your vet for more information.
Be Prepared To Commit
If you’ve decided to indulge your child’s requests for a pet, then to be fair, December is as good a time as any. The main thing here is to be willing to supervise the pet’s care and, if need be, take it over entirely. It’s all too common for children to beg for pets, only to quickly lose interest. If you suspect this may be the case with your little one, start with something small, like a goldfish or gerbil.
Consider A Shelter Pet
What if this is a good time to bring a new furry buddy into your home? Please consider giving a shelter pet a second chance at happiness. Many people insist that the pets they adopted from shelters are actually the best pets ever!
