Tips For Adopting A Shelter Cat

April 15 2023

April 30th is Adopt A Shelter Pet Day! We’re always happy to spread awareness and love for shelter pets. There are far too many kitties in shelters, hoping that someone will take them home and adopt them. If you’re considering getting a feline pal from a shelter, you definitely have our support. A local vet discusses adopting Fluffy from a shelter in this article from Armitage Animal Clinic, your Newmarket, ON pet clinic.

Be Prepared

Fluffy will need food, toys, treats, a litterbox and litter, a crate or carrier, dishes, and a first-aid kit. Some of these things should be chosen according to your furry pal’s age and health. For instance, if you’re adopting a kitten, you should avoid clay and clumping litters, as they can be dangerous for baby cats if ingested.

Petproofing

Fluffy is super playful, which makes her a very fun and entertaining pet. However, she doesn’t always know what is and isn’t safe for her. Make your home safe for your tiny lion by removing potential dangers, such as wires and cords, plastic bags and ties, chemicals, medication, and toxic plants. (Tip: check the ASPCA site here.) Ask your vet for specific advice.

Veterinary Appointment

One of the first things to do is make your feline friend an appointment. Most shelter cats have been fixed. However, you’ll want to get a good idea of Fluffy’s overall health and well-being, and make sure she’s current on vaccines and parasite control. Microchipping is also a must!

KItty Luxuries

It’s pretty easy to turn your home into a luxury palace for your furry little friend. Start by getting some comfy beds for your drowsy pet to snooze in. Fluffy will also need a good scratching post or board. Your feline overlord will also appreciate a cat tower and, of course, some empty boxes.

Purr Activation

The biggest rule about winning Fluffy’s heart? Don’t force attention on her. You want her to feel safe enough to approach you. That’s very important for bonding. Hold a treat or toy out, and call her to you. If she seems hesitant, don’t push it. It may take time, but that’s okay. Trust sometimes has to be won slowly. It will be well worth it!
